Why 10MB

Discord limits file uploads to 10 MB for accounts without Nitro. Many forums, support forms and older email systems use a similar limit. Gmail and Outlook.com allow about 20 to 25 MB for attachments, so a 10 MB file also sends without trouble there. A minute of phone video is often 100 MB or more, so it has to be compressed first.

How to compress a video to 10MB

1. Drop the video in the area above. The original size, resolution, length and bitrate are shown.
2. Check that Target size mode is on and the target is 10 MB. You can type another value or click a preset (8, 10, 25, 50 or 100 MB).
3. Look at the estimated video bitrate. If a warning says the target is too small, lower the resolution or remove the sound.
4. Click Compress and save the MP4.

How long a video fits in 10MB

10 MB holds about 80,000 kilobits. The tool divides that by the length of the video and keeps 128 kbps for the sound. The rest goes to the picture.

• 30 seconds: about 2,500 kbps for video. 1080p looks fine.
• 1 minute: about 1,200 kbps. Use 720p.
• 2 to 3 minutes: about 300 to 550 kbps. Use 480p. Remove the sound if it is not needed, which frees 128 kbps for the picture.
• Over 5 minutes: the picture will be very blocky. Trim the video first with the Trim video tool, or send a link instead.

Tips

• The video is encoded in one pass, so the result can be a few percent off the target. If the limit is strict, set 9.5 MB.
• Balanced encoding speed gives better quality at the same size. Fast is 2 to 3 times faster.
• Browser encoding is slower than desktop software. A 1-minute 1080p clip can take a few minutes on an average laptop.
