Files are processed in this browser. They are not uploaded to a server.

Why use animated WEBP instead of GIF

GIF is limited to 256 colors and compresses poorly. Animated WEBP keeps full color and is often 3 to 5 times smaller for the same clip. That means faster page loads on a website or blog, and a better chance of staying under a chat app's upload limit.

All modern browsers display animated WEBP, and so do Discord and Telegram. Some older apps and email clients do not, so keep a GIF version if you need to support them.

How to convert MP4 to WEBP

  1. Drop an MP4 (or MOV, MKV, WEBM) file in the area above. WEBP is already selected as the output format.
  2. Drag across the thumbnail strip to select the part to keep. Press Space to loop it.
  3. Set the width, frame rate and quality. Crop the frame if you need only part of it.
  4. Click Make GIF. The file is saved as .webp. Processing happens in your browser, and the video is not uploaded.

Recommended settings

  • Website hero or blog post: 640 to 800 px wide, 15 to 20 fps, medium quality.
  • Chat stickers and reactions: 320 to 480 px wide, 12 to 15 fps.
  • Product demos and UI recordings: crop to the important area first. Then use 10 to 12 fps. Interfaces do not need high frame rates.

The quality setting applies only to WEBP. Lowering it reduces file size with little visible change on most footage. Width and the number of frames still have the largest effect on size.

Using animated WEBP on a web page

An animated WEBP works in a normal image tag, for example <img src="demo.webp" alt="Demo">. It loops forever and needs no JavaScript. If the clip is longer than about 10 seconds, a muted, looping MP4 in a <video> tag is usually smaller still.

Checking the result

Before you save, the tool shows the number of frames. If the file comes out too large, lower the width first, then the frame rate, then the quality. Cutting the clip by one or two seconds also helps, because every second at 15 fps adds 15 full frames. A warning appears above 450 frames, since those files take longer to make and come out large.

FAQ

Does the WEBP keep the sound?
No. Animated WEBP is an image format and cannot hold audio.
Will it loop?
Yes. The saved WEBP is set to loop forever.
Can I make an animated PNG instead?
Yes. Choose APNG as the format. APNG keeps every color without loss, but files are the largest of the three formats.
