Why convert PNG to JPG

PNG is lossless, which makes it large for photos. A photo or a screenshot of a photo saved as PNG is often 3 to 10 times bigger than the same image as JPG. Converting to JPG helps when an upload form has a size limit, when email attachments are too big, or when a website loads slowly.

The conversion runs in your browser. Your images are not uploaded.

How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. Drop one or more PNG files in the area above, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl + V. JPG is already selected as the output format.
  2. Set the quality. The default is 90. The estimated output size updates as you change it.
  3. If you also want smaller dimensions, choose a scale, a custom pixel size or a preset.
  4. Drag the divider in the preview to compare the PNG and the JPG.
  5. Click Save, or Save all to convert every file with the same settings.

Recommended settings

  • Photos: quality 80 to 85. The file shrinks a lot and the difference is hard to see.
  • Screenshots with text: quality 90 or higher. Lower values add blur around letters.
  • Large camera images: also reduce the width, for example to 50%. Halving the width cuts the pixel count to a quarter.

When to keep PNG

  • Transparency: JPG cannot store it. Transparent areas become white. Logos and icons with transparent backgrounds should stay PNG.
  • Line art, diagrams and UI screenshots: flat colors and sharp edges are often smaller and cleaner as PNG.
  • Images you will edit again: each JPG save loses a little detail.

If you need a small file with transparency, try WEBP. It supports transparency and is usually smaller than both PNG and JPG.

The line under the preview shows the original size, the new size and the percentage, for example 4.2 MB → 610 KB. If the JPG comes out bigger than the PNG, the line is shown as a warning. In that case, keep the PNG.
