Why convert WEBP to JPG

Many websites now serve images as WEBP. When you save one, you get a .webp file. Some photo editors, older versions of Windows and Office, print services and upload forms do not accept WEBP. JPG works in all of them.

The conversion runs in your browser. Your images are not uploaded.

How to convert WEBP to JPG

  1. Drop one or more WEBP files in the area above, or paste a copied image with Ctrl + V. JPG is already selected as the output format.
  2. Set the quality. The default is 90.
  3. Drag the divider in the preview to compare the original and the JPG.
  4. Click Save for the image you are viewing, or Save all to convert every file with the same settings.

Which quality to choose

  • 90 to 100: photos you plan to print or edit further.
  • 80 to 85: good for sharing and uploading. Most people cannot see a difference from 90.
  • 60 to 75: small files for email or forms with size limits. Some blur appears around fine detail.

WEBP usually compresses better than JPG, so the JPG file can be larger than the WEBP at similar quality. That is expected.

Things to know

  • JPG does not support transparency. Transparent areas in a WEBP become white.
  • Animated WEBP files are converted as a single still image.
  • You can resize in the same step. Choose a scale, custom pixel size or preset before saving.
  • Saved files contain no EXIF data.

Stop getting WEBP files

Browsers save images in the format the site sends, so there is no browser setting that always saves JPG. Converting after download is the simplest fix. If you collect many images from one site, drop them here together and use Save all once. Each saved file keeps the original name, followed by the pixel size and .jpg, for example photo_1200x800.jpg.

FAQ

Why did my WEBP come out with a white background?
The image had transparent areas, and JPG cannot store transparency. Choose PNG as the output format to keep it.
Can I convert WEBP to PNG instead?
Yes. Choose PNG under the format option. PNG keeps transparency and loses no detail, but files are larger.
Is there a limit on how many files I can convert?
There is no set number. Very large batches depend on your device memory, so split them into groups of a few dozen if the browser slows down.
